Benefits of Grounding
What is
Grounding?
Grounding is a technique that can help you anchor yourself in
the here and now and keep you from getting lost in the past. In grounding, you
attain balance between the two—conscious of reality and able to tolerate it. Grounding
‘anchors’ you to the present and to reality.
Just as a Building needs strong and deep foundation to
sustain against the ravages of weather and time, there’s a lot to be said for
keeping both feet firmly on the ground in this fast moving world. Grounding is a way of helping yourself
to cope with stressful periods in your life. Stress is now recognized as a
major contributor to ill-health.
In unsettled times of your life, where stimulation and information
overload is the norm, it is better that, we need more than ever to reconnect to
the ground beneath our feet to help us a catch our breath and come back to
ourselves.
The practice of
grounding, literally, brings us down to earth in a kind of homecoming that
takes us out of the trance states of our mind and into the more solid resources
of the here and now.
The benefits of grounding have been recognized for thousands
of years in meditation, yoga, tai-chi, chi-kung and different forms of energy
medicine and healing like Reiki healing, Pranic healing etc
In this process we can maintain an appropriate energy charge
by releasing any energy which would constitute an excessive charge within
the systems of the body, emotions, mind, etc. (By analogy, our home's
electrical circuits are grounded to dismiss the extra electricity). ,. In
simple terms, this means using the ground to earth and re-align the body and
mind so they can move back towards a state of balance.
In most meditative practices this involves taking awareness
down into the body and to its connection with the ground beneath it, engaging
with that connection and letting the rest happen naturally.
WAYS TO
GROUND
1.
Grounded
Chair Posture: This is a posture in which both feet are on the
floor and your spine is straight, but not rigidly so. In this posture, you are
actively aware of your body’s existence and its connection to the ground. Your
legs should be uncrossed – this allows the flow of energy to pass freely
through the body. Your hands may be resting on your thighs or on the arms of
the chair. Your head is held high. Notice the way your body rests in the chair;
notice the way your feet are resting on the ground. This is a posture that can
allow you to feel both strong and at ease.
2. Walk bare foot: Walk carefully,
mindfully around the room. Mindful walking can be slow or brisk. The goal is to
be fully present with each step as you take it. Bring your attention to the
actual sensations of walking. Notice how the heel, then the ball of your foot
makes contact with the floor as you walk. Notice the bend in your knees, the
flex in your toes, the shift in your weight with each step you take. When your
attention wanders, bring it back to your walking. Center yourself in your body
and be present in the moment. Count ten steps, and ten more, and ten more,
until you feel calmed.
3.
Dance
or Sing: Physically helps person be grounded and be in the
present, Emotionally helps to express and externalize emotion, release tension
and stress, Mentally Helps to organize and create perspective, Spiritually Helps
to reconnect with spirit .
4. Take a Shower: Take a shower/bath.
Notice the sensations of the water. Follow the flowing water from Head to Toe.
5. Laugh: Even if that’s hard. Just the act of
laughing about something, anything can break that spinning out of control
feeling.
6.
Exercise:
Jump up and down on the spot. Try some gentle yoga.
7. Energy
Healing: Reiki Self Healing(
Hands On Healing) is a wonderful process to energize you and ground you. One
must start from the Leg positions and end with Head Positions. Reiki Healing
symbol meditation is also powerful with Grounding Meditation Techniques.
8. Grounding Meditation: Use it whenever you are feeling off
balance, or when you feel flighty after doing energy work or energy healing
1. Preparation
·
Turn off all electronic gadgets: cell
phones, televisions, etc.
·
Find a nice, quiet place where you can be
alone for about 15 - 20 minutes. If you can do this meditation outside
with your bare feet in the earth (on the beach, in the grass, etc.) it will enhance
your experience.
·
Sit upright in a comfortable chair with your
feet planted on the ground. Make sure you do not cross your legs - you
want energy to flow through you.
·
Let your arms hang comfortably at your sides
or rest your hands (palms up) on your lap. Take a moment and make sure
your body is comfortable.
2.
Guidelines
·
Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
·
Breathe in through your nose, slowly and
deeply. Feel your stomach expand as you
breathe in. Exhale and feel your stomach
relax.
·
Focus on breathing this way for a couple of
minutes until it becomes rhythmic and effortless.
·
Take a few moments and allow your body to completely
relax. Let all tension be released from
all your muscles. Feel Good.
·
Imagine a magnificent Whitish golden light
radiating down through your top of the head via your crown chakra. The light feels warm and safe.
·
Allow it to slowly flow through your body,
touching and opening each chakra via the Sushumna Nadi. As it reaches your root chakra at the base of
your tailbone, you become aware that your energy centers are opened and
balanced.
·
The whitish golden light continues to move
through you, all the way to your feet.
It is a gentle, yet powerful light.
It flows through the bottoms of your feet and into the earth. It moves like a stream until it reaches the
core of the earth(center of the Earth) when it anchors itself.
·
Let go!
You don't need to hold onto anything that doesn't belong to you. Take as long as you need flushing excess
energy into the earth until your body feels grounded.
·
When you are done, the light, move upstream
back up and into your body. Though you
are in your body, you still feel completely anchored to the earth. Your experience has shown you how to ground
yourself with ease.
·
When you feel ready, move your fingers and
toes and feel the surrounding and the sensations in the body when comfortable
open your eyes.
